Sailors’ and Fishermen’s Day in Kazashko: the village’s biggest festival

Every August the little village turns into a fair. There is a church service, fish on every table, songs from the Kalinushka folk group and a concert by the lake. Here is what to expect.

A festival rooted in fishing

Fishing is Kazashko’s traditional livelihood. According to the newspaper Trud, the village’s fishermen set out early in spring for the southern Black Sea waters and returned with their catch and with money. Sailors’ and Fishermen’s Day continues this tradition. It is the village’s biggest summer festival and draws visitors from all over Varna Province.

How the day unfolds

  • In the morning there is a service in the Church of the Holy Protection (Pokrov).
  • During the day the village turns into a fair with stalls and sweets. Every table has ritual fish dishes and fresh fish from the lake: grey mullet, anchovy and other local species.
  • In the evening there is a festive concert on the stone stage behind the community centre (chitalishte).

By tradition, the women welcome the boats returning with the catch.

The 2026 festival

In 2026 the festival was held on Sunday, 16 August. The Kazashko mayor’s office and the Mikhail Sholokhov – 1958 community centre invited everyone to a concert from 18:00 featuring the Kalinushka folk group, the Elektra ballet, the Arlekin theatre, the Berezka trio and others. Photos of the festival were published on the village’s Facebook page.
